USA proposes updates to Nutrition Facts Label

First Lady Michelle Obama and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have announced severe changes of the required nutrition information on more than 700.000 food items. These changes are suppose to help customers make healthier food choices and address current public health problems like obesity and heart diseases.

The proposed updates include:

  • Detailed information on the amount of “added sugar” in a food product.
  • Declaration of adequate serving sizes that reflect the amount that people really consume.
  • Highlighting of the nutrition facts box, especially with regard to certain elements such as calories.

Michelle Obama said: “So this is a big deal, and it’s going to make a big difference for families across this country.”
