This position paper summarizes the lectures and discussions during the 9th NRW-workshop on consumer research from the organizers' perspective (the center for consumer research NRW and the institute for economic and social history at Phil Philipps-University Marburg). The workshop 'Consumers in the past and present – Transformations and conflicting fields in consumer policy' took place on May 23, 2016 at the Heinrich-Heine Institute in Düsseldorf and the lectures will be published in the series of articles on consumer research Volume 7.
