Sustainable business models alone have so far proved insufficient to effectively limit environmental impacts and social inequalities. A literature review shows that sufficiency-oriented and regenerative business models share numerous common features – such as promoting durable products, collaborating with relevant stakeholders, and reinvesting profits in sustainable value creation. Building on this, the authors have developed a modular framework designed to support companies in combining both approaches. At the same time, the study identifies three key systemic barriers – growth-dependent logic, dwindling legitimacy and a lack of alignment with socio-ecological goals – which hinder the implementation of such business models.
