DigitalizationStreaming very common among consumers

The digital association Bitkom today published new survey results on the streaming behavior of German consumers. According to the results, 87 percent of Internet users stream videos, movies or series on the Internet, 38 percent do so daily and 46 percent weekly.

For this representative survey, Bitkom Research on behalf of the digital association Bitkom interviewed a total of 1,163 people in Germany aged 16 and over by telephone, including 1,012 Internet users.

These are further details:

  • Overall, 75 percent of all German consumers stream videos online. Among consumers who regularly use the Internet, the share is as high as 87 percent.
  • On online portals such as YouTube, Vimeo and Twitch, Internet users said to watch videos (85 percent), shows that were already on linear TV (71 percent) or livestreams of the current TV program (37 percent).
  • On the other hand, series and movies are streamed on on-demand portals such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video or Disney+ (61 percent) and clips and reels are streamed on social media such as TikTok, Instagram or Facebook (41 percent).
  • While 80 percent of 16- to 29-year-olds still watch traditional TV now and then, almost all of the 50- to 64-year-olds (95 percent) and seniors over 65 (97 percent) continue to watch traditional linear TV via cable, satellite or antenna.

Sebastian Klöß, Head of Consumer Technology at Bitkom, noted: "Anytime, anywhere: streaming now plays an important role in people's everyday lives. The number of offerings is growing steadily. Apart from the streaming offers of TV broadcasters, all streaming options have again gained in popularity compared to 2021."
