Earlier investigations commissioned by the German Federal Environmental Agency have shown that electronic devices are being used for a shorter period of time compared to ten years ago. Products that are replaced before their optimal lifespan or period of use (so-called obsolescence) result in a higher loss of resources and an increased generation of waste. In this regard, the German Federal Environmental Agency has identified a need for action and has thus presented recommendations for strategies against obsolescence in its position paper based on two research initiatives.
