Packaging is ambivalent: on the one hand, it fulfills a variety of functions and thus shapes our supply and dietary patterns; on the other hand, with its very short lifespan, it is the disposable product par excellence. As waste, they not only pollute ecosystems, but their disposal or recycling is also extremely resource-intensive. “Precycling, i.e. the avoidance of packaging waste, is therefore an important issue in science and practice. The contributors provide an insight into this complex topic and break down the areas of conflict. It becomes clear that technical, social, economic and regulatory approaches must be interlinked in precycling in order to reduce packaging waste effectively and sustainably.
