The commemorative publication Values and Law: Environmental and Consumer Protection in a Democratic Constitutional State honours the academic work of Tobias Brönneke, founder and long-standing director of the Institute for Consumer Research and Sustainable Consumption (vunk) at Pforzheim University. The anthology brings together contributions from the fields of law, economics and consumer research and highlights key issues in consumer and environmental law in the context of social, economic and technological developments. The topics covered range from the role of values and morals in economics to the challenges posed by refugee migration and political polarisation to current developments in environmental law and sustainable consumption. Other focal points include institutional consumer policy, the enforcement of consumer rights – for example, in the context of the diesel scandal or class action lawsuits – and new challenges in the digital world, such as AI systems, fake reviews and digital business models. The volume thus offers an interdisciplinary perspective on the importance of consumer and environmental protection for the functioning and stability of the democratic constitutional state.
