There are many uncertainties in society about the effects of electromagnetic fields (EMF). The public discourse reflects the challenges associated with the introduction of new technologies: the balance between technological progress and social acceptance. These uncertainties exist despite the scientific consensus that EMF pose no risks to humans or the environment as long as legal limits for exposure are adhered to. Informing about the state of research is one of the tasks of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS).
Given this background, the BfS has commissioned the ConPolicy Institute to carry out a detailed analysis of its past social science risk communication research.
The aim of the project is to compile a comprehensive research synthesis. To this end, all social science research projects in the field of risk communication on electromagnetic fields initiated by the BfS will be analyzed. Based on this, an updated research agenda and relevant recommendations for action for risk communication by the BfS and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) will be developed.
The ConPolicy Institute leads the project and is responsible for the entire work. Prof. Dr. Constanze Rossmann, an expert in health and risk communication, and Dr. Sarah Drießen, an expert on the biological and health effects of electromagnetic fields, are also involved in the project in an advisory capacity.
