How can digital infrastructures be designed to be both more sustainable and more sovereign? The practical guide from the Sustainable Digitalisation Community of the Federal Ministry for the Environment brings together key approaches at the intersection of sustainability, digitalisation and digital sovereignty. The focus is on green coding, green IT, open-source software and OpenCode as building blocks for a resource- and energy-efficient digital infrastructure that is independent in the long term. Using specific tools and practical examples – including the Blue Angel label for software and data centres, the Green Metrics Tool and Schleswig-Holstein’s open-source strategy – the guide demonstrates how these approaches can be implemented in practice. Finally, specific recommendations for action are set out, such as giving greater consideration to sustainability criteria in tendering and procurement, sharing knowledge and best practices, and continuously reviewing energy and resource use.
