To support more sustainable use of clothing, many activities in recent years have focused on production conditions in the supply chain and the circularity of textiles. These are very important starting points for more sustainability in the textile sector. However, reducing the environmental impacts of clothing production, use and disposal also requires durable clothing, measures to extend useful life and intensify use, and overall reduced consumption. This study brings together the current state of research and practice on the topics of clothing longevity and useful life. The study systematizes currently existing definitions, criteria and measurement standards for longevity, presents the influences on the useful life along the life cycle of a garment, shows the existing best practice examples and outlines research recommendations based on the findings. It is intended to help put these issues more firmly on the agenda of manufacturers, policymakers and consumers. Key challenges identified are

  1. the lack of a common definition of durability for clothing,
  2. the establishment of environmentally compatible business models and consumption structures, and
  3. the lack of data on the use phase.

Methodologically, the study is based on the evaluation of existing literature and research as well as own short analyses and expert interviews.
