The US Consumer Product Safety Commission today went online with a new Internet portal on product safety (www.saferProducts.gov). Consumers are encouraged to submit Reports of harm or risks of harm, and to search for safety information on products they own or may be considering buying.
Chairman of the Commission, Inez Tenebaum, argued: “Through SaferProducts.gov consumers will have open access to product safety information that they have never seen before and the information will empower them to make safer choices.”
US consumer organizations such as Consumers Union or the Consumer Federation of America applauded the launch of the database. Not only would consumers no longer be left in the dark about product safety, the Commission would also be able to more nimbly identify and act upon safety hazards.
