Digitization not only transforms our society, it also has an environmental impact: on the one hand, digitization can improve the environment, e.g. through digitally optimized production processes. On the other hand, negative environmental effects may arise, for instance, due to a growing demand for Internet-enabled products that require more resources and energy during production and use. With this impulse paper, the German Federal Environmental Agency (UBA) shows where digitalization can create opportunities and challenges for environmental policy. In this way, the UBA wants to contribute to shaping digitization in line with the mission statement of sustainability.
