Consumers are responsible for 39 percent of the food waste that is produced in Germany every year. At the same time 82 percent of German consumers feel responsible for reducing the amount of food waste. On the occasion of the "Expert Forum Foodwaste" held by the Federal Environment Agency on the 5th of September ConPolicy project manager Dr. Jana Diels gave a talk on how nudges can support consumer to no longer unnecessarily throw away food.
Together with representatives of foot retailing, gastronomy as well as producers of household appliances Jana Diels discussed options how deliberate choice architecture – e.g. the reduction of plate size in hotel buffets – can stimulate consumers to change their behavior and to reduce the amount of foot waste produced.
