Major social media platforms are coming under increasing criticism for their non-transparent algorithms, data-intensive business models and centralised control. This practical guide shows how the Fediverse, as a decentralised network of independent platforms, can offer an alternative for digital sovereignty, data protection and communication in the public interest. Using services such as Mastodon, Pixelfed and PeerTube as examples, it becomes clear that users can share content across platforms without having to submit to the logic of commercial platforms. The findings are particularly relevant for organisations: the guide shows that, despite having a smaller reach, joining the Fediverse can offer strategic advantages – for instance, through credible positioning on openness, sustainability and digital self-determination.
