An unhealthy diet is now widely recognized to be one of the greatest causes of ill health in developed economies. In the UK, diet-related risk factors account for 11 of the top 20 risk factors for chronic ill health, with the first being high BMI and the second being high fasting plasma glucose. Obesity and diabetes are going to cost health services dearly over the next two decades, as the rise in child obesity in the late 1990s continues to work its way through adulthood, and as the increasing proportion of people transitioning from healthy weight to obesity in adulthood shows little sign of abating.
