Municipalities pay a lot of money to eliminate waste such as single-use packaging. The handout presents 28 measures with which cities can influence the volume of packaging. Municipalities can take action not only in their own procurement systems: Above all, they should encourage and support companies and citizens to use less packaging.

First, this brochure explains how municipalities can develop a strategy on the subject of packaging. It then shows the range of possible measures – from reusable systems for to-go meals and requirements in bylaws to advice and educational work. Because many of the approaches are already being tested in various German cities, the handout contains numerous practical examples.

The third part of the brochure contains suggestions for successful networking with other municipalities and with relevant local players. Finally, the brochure points out how municipalities can improve the framework conditions at the state and federal level.
