Data analyses and artificial intelligence (AI) in the power grid can not only provide great added value for grid operators and the overall system, but are also necessary for the successful transformation to a sustainable energy supply. At the electricity distribution grid level, there are numerous use cases whose potential has already been demonstrated many times, for example grid status estimates, scenario analyses and predictive maintenance. Data analyses and AI will continue to gain importance in order to make the increasing complexity of grid planning, operation and maintenance manageable and to enable efficient processes. Numerous methods and technologies are available and have been tested, but are not yet in widespread use.

In the Data4Grid project of dena's Future Energy Lab, distribution grid operators have worked together with start-ups to advance concrete use cases for data analyses and AI in the electricity grid in practice. The experiences and findings from this cooperation are summarised here and are accompanied by a project report prepared by umlaut energy GmbH and a scientific report by Fraunhofer IEE. Further results of the project are an overview of the current requirements and solutions for grid operators and an implementation guide for data analyses and AI in the electricity distribution grid.
