Prof. Dr. Christian Thorun becomes a member of the German Club of Rome Society

The Club of Rome aims to understand the most important problems facing humanity and the planet in the future, particularly through a holistic and interdisciplinary perspective, and to identify possible solutions. The Club became known worldwide through its report The Limits to Growth, published in 1972.

The German Club of Rome Society brings together personalities from a wide range of social sectors to provide impetus for the sustainability transformation, particularly at national level, in the spirit of the Club of Rome. The current president is the climate scientist Prof. Dr. Mojib Latif.

ConPolicy Managing Director, Prof. Dr. Christian Thorun, was accepted as a member of the German Club of Rome Society at the beginning of the year.

More agility as well as continuation and bundling of relevant funding programs in the field of sustainability
ConPolicy supports National Alliance for Future-Oriented Funding Conditions

In the run-up to the 2025 federal elections, political debates are focusing on migration issues, Germany's future viability, the strained financial situation and growing bureaucracy. The urgent need for sustainable transformation is not being discussed to the same extent. In order for such a transformation to succeed, it is crucial to recognize that nature, environmental and climate protection require a vibrant civil society and, in particular, an independent scientific debate.

The National Alliance for Future-Oriented Funding Conditions has developed proposals on how targeted and efficient funding from the federal budget can be possible in the future. The recommendations aim to create a funding framework that invests specifically in Germany's future viability.

The Alliance's central demands on funding policy are as follows

  • Reducing bureaucracy in funding programs and speeding up application and approval procedures. Greater digitalization and simplified state aid regulations are necessary for this. The planned simplification of state aid regulations at EU level should be actively supported to this end.
  • Bundling of programs and avoidance of redundant structures.
  • Continuation of existing, successful funding programs.
  • Evaluation of the effectiveness of programs and the funding efficiency of project sponsors.
  • Participation of the target group in the process of developing new programs.

The alliance includes numerous non-profit organizations, associations and research institutes from the fields of climate protection, environment, energy, consumer protection, social services and welfare. The ConPolicy Institute played a key role in formulating the demands and developing the alliance from the outset.

What lessons can be learned from 20 years of risk communication research on electromagnetic fields?
New Project for the Federal Office for Radiation Protection

Many people are unsure about the effects of electromagnetic fields (EMF), although no risks can be proven as long as the legal limits for exposure are adhered to. As part of a new research project commissioned by the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS), the ConPolicy Institute is investigating what insights can be gained from 20 years of social science risk communication research on EMF. The aim is to comprehensively analyze the current state of research and to develop an updated research agenda and practical recommendations for communicating the environmental compatibility of EMF. The project also includes the analysis of socio-cultural and technological developments and the implementation of a digital expert workshop. ConPolicy is supported by Prof. Dr. Constanze Rossmann (expert for risk and health communication) and Dr. Sarah Drießen (expert for the environmental compatibility of EMF).

Further information on the project can be found here.
