ConPolicy contribution to the annual conference 2024 of the Plattform Privatheit
The perception of privacy risks in the metaverse by consumers
The Plattform Privatheit supports research projects funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) on the protection of privacy in the digital world. In this context, the Plattform Privatheit organises an annual conference, which was held on October 17th and 18th in 2024 under the theme ‘Freedom in digital infrastructures’.
Dr. Otmar Lell, Project Manager at the ConPolicy Institute for Consumer Policy, presented initial results from the PRiME project (PRivacy in the Metaverse) at the conference together with Tom Hubert, a PhD student and research assistant at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. The risks of current business models in the metaverse for data protection and personal rights are high, but are not yet widely known. This was demonstrated by the focus group discussions held as part of PRiME. Design proposals developed in the project were also presented to enable users to protect themselves from privacy risks in the metaverse, as well as related legal issues, especially with regard to the possibility of prior consent through Personal Information Management Systems (PIMS).
More information about the project can be found here.
New project for the German Federal Environment Agency & BMUV
Digital information on sustainable consumption and sustainable product selection in online retail
On behalf of the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV), ConPolicy, together with co2online, is investigating the availability and quality of sustainability information in German-speaking online retail. The aim of the project is to identify gaps in the information situation and to develop recommendations for action in order to better support consumers in selecting sustainable, durable and repairable products.
The project analyzes the status quo of digital information offerings and focuses on sustainability aspects such as repair options and second-hand products. In addition, the existing UBA environmental tips will be strengthened, and concrete measures will be developed to improve the visibility and dissemination of the information.
You can find more information about the project here.
ConPolicy contribution to the blog „reframe[Tech] - algorithms for the common good” by Bertelsmann-Stiftung
Strategy approaches for privacy and data protection in the metaverse
Privacy protection currently plays hardly any role in the plans for virtual worlds in the metaverse. If this does not change, the metaverse will take the collection and analysis of personal data to the next level.
Johanna Grün, a master's student of political science at the University of Gothenburg, reports on privacy risks in the metaverse and on political and technical solutions in her guest article on the Bertelsmann Foundation's blog ‘reframe[Tech] - Algorithms for the Common Good”. The blog post is based on Johanna Grün's experiences as a ConPolicy intern in the PRIME (PRIvacy in the Metaverse) project.
