German parliament constitutes committee on inquiry on the “Internet and digital society”

On Thursday the German parliament decided to constitute a committee on inquiry on the “Internet and the digital society”. Parliamentarians argue that the digital age brings with it new opportunities for the individual as well as the democratic evolution of our society as a whole. It also bears great potentials for economic development and our knowledge society.

At the same time these developments carry with them new challenges. Also in the Internet the privacy of consumers must be respected, consumers need to be informed about their rights and duties in e-commerce, consumer rights must be respected and children have to be protected.

17 members of parliament and 17 experts have the task of developing political recommendations until the summer of 2012. These recommendations should encompass both national and international measures.
